W Ballantyne Edinburgh Longcase Clock

William Ballantyne of Edinburgh.

An excellent Scottish oak longcase clock of pleasing proportions, standing 218cm (7 Ft 2 inches) tall.

The plain oak case of good colour features a long trunk door, brass escutcheon, fluted columns to the trunk and a plain base with bracket feet.  The hood has oak pillars topped with brass capitals, windows to both sides, a swan neck pediment finished with a single ball and spire finial above very nice blind fret work.

The 8 day duration movement strikes the hours on a bell and with a 12″ arched brass dial displaying an engraved name band above the date window. The dial features brass corner spandrels, a silvered chapter ring, strike silent ring, seconds dial and calendar ring. The clock runs on two iron weights held on spoked pulleys

William Ballantyne is recorded as working from 1778 to 1806.  This clock is dated around 1785.
