Thomas Hunter London Longcase Clock

Thomas Hunter of London.

Top quality nicely proportioned London mahogany longcase clock.  Standing 240cm (7 Ft 11 inches) tall, the case is made from finest mahogany with matching curl veneers to the front elevation.  The trunk features a raised veneered panel to the base, double plinth and fluted columns finished with brass reading and brass capitals. The hood features sound frets backed with gold silk to the sides and the centre of the pagoda, fluted columns with matching brass reading and capitals.  The maker Thomas Hunter of Fenchurch Street London is recorded as working from 1744 to 1790.  This clock is dated around 1760. Of interest this clock still has an original maker’s label on the inside of the trunk door.

The 12″ dial features brass corner spandrels, a silvered chapter ring, strike silent ring, seconds dial and calendar ring. The makers name is on a silvered cartouche above the date work window. The five pillar rack striking movement runs on two brass cased weights, strikes the hours on a bell and has a duration of eight days.
