J Hall & Co Bracket Clock

John Hall and Co Manchester.

This is a lovely proportioned ebonised musical fusee Bracket Clock.  The case veneered in fruit wood is ebonised and embellished with brass work throughout.  The fish scale side frets are backed with a rich dark red silk and the rear door is glazed allowing a view of the movements’ finely engraved back plate.

The movement is a three train chain fusee of the finest quality. On the quarters there is a choice of two different chimes on a nest of eight bells.  The two quarter chime tunes are Cambridge on four bells and Wittington on eight.  The hours are struck on a large resonant gong. Both the back plate, pendulum and the ancillary brackets and supports are all very nicely engraved with floral scrolls.  The pendulum also has a pendulum transit lock with its original knob.

The brass dial features a silvered chapter ring, two subsidiary dials in the arch (Strike silent and chimes change) and matted and gilded centres to all three. Fine quality brass spandrels nicely fill all the space around the dial.

The clock stands 56 cm tall to the top of its upright handle, 32 cm wide at its feet and 23 cm deep also at its feet.

John Hall and Co are recorded as working around 1848.
