Frodsham Bracket Clock

Frodsham Bracket Clock

Frodsham Bracket Clock.

This is a lovely proportioned 1/4 chiming fusee Bracket Clock.  The case is veneered in Rosewood and embellished with brass inlay to the front elevation.  The side elevations of the case have brass fish scale sound frets backed with a rich dark red silk, situated below drop ring brass handles. To the rear of the clock, the back door is glazed allowing a view of the movement and the finely engraved makers signature.

The movement, unusually for a 1/4 chiming clock is a twin train fusee of the finest quality.  Most 1/4 chiming clocks are designed to run with three trains of wheels therefore three winding holes.  This clock is designed to run with two trains of wheels the right hand train providing both 1/4 chimes and striking on the hour.

On the quarters the clock plays Wittington chimes on a nest of eight bells, and on the hour the clock strikes the hours on a single bell without the Wittington peel.  On the back of the movement the backplate is engraved with makers name “Frodsham” Gracechurch St, London.

The plain painted dial is of a simple elegant design featuring a strike silent dial in the arch.  The dial is signed “Frodsham” Gracechurch St, London, matching the engraving on the backplate.

The clock stands 39 cm tall, 28 cm wide at its feet and 20 cm deep also at its feet.

From the address recorded on the movement and dial, the maker has been identified as John Frodsham, the clock is dated around 1820.
